This November, California voters will have an opportunity to improve living conditions for millions of farm animals and ban the most egregious confinement practices. The Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act, a ballot initiative brought by leading animal advocacy organizations, would require that all farm animals be allowed to lay down and turn around freely. It would also ban veal crates for calves, gestation crates for pregnant sows, and battery cages for chickens — three of the most intensive confinement practices in the industry.

The California egg industry opposes the initiative, citing economic reasons. The Humane Society of the United States responds to this argument, as does Californians for Humane Farms. Also see the full text of the Act and Pew Commission’s recent report on factory farming.

Finally, a YouTube video highlighting some of the practices that would be banned under the Act.
